I feel the negative sentiment around infographics is a product of exactly what you describe, "bad" infographics. Just as anything that gets mainstream attention it becomes watered down and tacky (ex. big data). I agree that "great" infographics are amazing tools for telling stories that include great depth and thought provoking design. Cheers! Maybe go on the offensive?
